One fact that must be borne in mind in advocating the use of home-made salt and sugar solutions is the wide variability that can occur in the concentration of sodium, especially when mothers prepare solutions using pinch-and-scoop or household spoon and glass methods. This study in Honduras revealed unacceptably high concentrations of sodium which could be hazardous to infants.
