When is it appropriate to recommend the use of "home-prepared oral rehydration salts" and when is prepacked ORS better?

Home-prepared solutions are recommended for use by parents to give to their child immediately an attack of diarrhoea starts - BEFORE any signs of dehydration occur.

Basically, the idea is to PREVENT dehydration and also by maintaining fluid and food intake to preserve a good nutritional status.
